Trials of Faith

The Bitter Waters Made Sweet

Evils of The Wilderness

Exodus 15:23-26

Occur Very Early in The Pilgrim Life

  • Young Christians believe their trials are over now that they have wings of faith.

In the world you shall have tribulation.

Chastisement is universal.

Israel was barely across the Red Sea When they were in the wilderness of Shur with no water.

On the third day they found worse than no water.

  • It was brackish, and not fit to drink.

  Assume Varied Shapes

No water for the first three days.

  • That was one trial.

Now they found undrinkable water.

  • They thought their trial was over.

It has only changed its shape.

  • No children - only to receive an Absalom.
  • Wealth - at the expense of health.

  Touch Very Vital Matters

They had found no water.

  • Not a lack of wine.
  • Not a lack of milk.

Lack of an essential of life.

The Tendency of Human Nature

They Murmured Against Moses

When Pharaoh forced they Israelites to make bricks without straw, Israel clearly saw the injustice.

We often deny that we are murmuring against God, and to prove it we increase our murmuring against Moses.

But now Israel was telling Moses to supply them with good water.

They Showed Their Unbelief in God

They had just had the entire width of the Red Sea parted for them by God.

What shall we drink?

They were singing about how God had moved in their behalf.

They could be singing here at Marah!

  • God destroyed the armies of Pharaoh and hosted His people with His chosen drink.

They had witnessed more than enough to feed their faith for Marah.

Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders.  Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people whom thou hast redeemed; thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation. Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O Lord, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established. V. 11, 13, 17

How many times have we said:

  • “I will never distrust God after this memorable deliverance, this singular display of his power has killed my unbelief.”

Remedy of Grace

Marah’s Bitterness Healed by Prayer

As soon as we have a prayer, God has a remedy.

  • The Lord showed him a tree.

But he led them to Marah!

Every Affliction Has A Promise In God’s Word

A promise which meets the case and was made for it.

You May Not Always Be Able To Find It

You may fumble over the Scriptures long before you get the true Word.

You may not get the verse(s) from the Word yourself.

You may get it from one of the saints of God.

  • The Word of power to the soul that the heart can grasp.

The Remedy Was Very Effective

Whatever your trouble, the Cross is a very effective sweetener.

  • In your trouble there is no punishment for sin.
  • There is no threat of hell.
  • Christ suffers with us.

The remedy was unending.

  • The waters were made absolutely sweet.

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience.
