Three High Priests

Salvation comes to us as the culmination of three distinct events:

Sacrifice

Burial

Resurrection

The Sacrifice

Once each year, on the day of atonement, the high priest would select a sacrifice for sin.

Leviticus 16:3-6

Three High Priests

When Jesus was sacrificed, there were 3 high priests:

  • Jesus—Hebrews 6:20 (1 John 2:2)
  • Caiaphas—Matthew 26:3

Only for Israel

  • Pontius Pilate—Gentile high priest

What do we gain from his death?

Nothing

Romans 4:25

1 Corinthians 15:14, 17

Everything about his death was a payment for sin.

The resurrection is proof that the penalty of sin was exhausted.

Only through the resurrection are we justified.

The Burial

Matthew 27:57-66

Matthew 28:1-6

Revelation 1:18

The Resurrection

For Justification, Not For Payment

The death of Jesus was for the Father.

The resurrection is for us who believe.

We may now see ourselves as getting something from his death only because he has been raised to justification and new life.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: John 11:25

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:54
