The Second Coming

Daniel 12:1-13

Two questions are asked in this chapter.

1. When shall the end be? (v. 6)

  • At the end of the week, after 3½ years.

2. What shall the end be? (v. 8)

  • Daniel is basically told to go away. However he is given the briefest of glimpses at the end insofar as he is told that all will be tried during this time. The righteous will be purified and the wicked will grow more wicked.

1 month = 30 days

3½ years = 42 months

42x30=1260 days

Verse 11

1260+30=1290

The sacrifice is taken away 30 days before the setting up of the abomination of desolation.

Verse 12

1290+45=1335

It is assumed, and I see no reason to contest this notion, that these extra 45 days are necessary for physically establishing the Millennium Kingdom.

Hebrews 10:30-39

From this ultimate condition there is neither remedy nor escape. Only vengeance awaits such persons.

  • Deuteronomy 32:35,36 is quoted as supporting evidence.

This hopeless apostasy and ultimate and irrevocable rejection leads only to the fiercest judgment from God. Psalm 135:14 is also noted as supporting evidence for these statements.

When he punishes them by creatures, the instrument abates something of the force of the blow; but, when he does it by his own hand, it is infinite misery.

Mark 13:14-23 (The Little Apocalypse)

v. 20 is key

Who are the “chosen”?

Psalm 135:4

Isaiah 41:8

Isaiah 44:1

Who is the “elect”?

Predominantly, Christ is referred to as the elect. Beyond that, there are certain key individuals who are referred to as “the elect,” Mary being most notable.

However:

Isaiah 45:4

Isaiah 65:22

Final Thoughts

The second coming (Gk. Parousia [parousia]can also be thought of as the second presence since the word was used to describe the royal presence of kings, queens, and other rulers.

Biblical theologian, N.T. Wright says:

If we spoke of Jesus’ royal presence within God’s new creation, rather than thinking of his ‘coming’ as an invasion from the outside, our talk about the future might make more sense. It would also be more biblical.

  • 1 Peter 2:9

Three Sure Things

1. That there is a time fixed for the termination of the church’s troubles, and the bringing about of her deliverance, and that this time will be punctually observed to a day.

2. That this time must be waited for with faith and patience.

3. That, when it comes, it will abundantly recompense us for our long expectations of it. Blessed is he who, having waited long, comes to it at last, for he will then have reason to say, Here is our God, and we have waited for him.
