False Peace

Jeremiah 6:9-17

Non Stop Pleasure And Frivolity

Always some excursion

Never happy unless you are being entertained

  • Parties
  • Music
  • Gaiety

Surely any man would have peace whose heart was as hard as stone.

What pain does a stone feel?

What storm is going to move the stubborn heart of a granite mountain? No difficulty in solving the riddle of how you have peace. PEACE, PEACE, WHEN THERE IS NO PEACE. There are nobler things for people to do than to kill time.

  • It is like the ocean being tossed into a tempest in order to float a feather or drown a fly.

Imbibing Infidel Notions

There are two sorts of infidels:

  • Those who know they never could distinguish themselves by anything that was right; they attempt to gain glory by pretending to believe and defend a lie.
  • Those who do not like the Bible because it does not like them.

It will not let them be comfortable in their sin.

A pillow of thorns.

They Blaspheme

The more they brag, blaspheme, curse, and argue; the more apparent it is they are trying to silence the groans of an uneasy spirit.

  • The Chinese hung tigers’ heads.

They believed the English would not attack. So these men string blasphemies and impieties imagining that conscience will not attack. PEACE, PEACE, WHEN THERE IS NO PEACE.

Careless & Determined to Let Well Enough Alone

They command conscience to be silent. When the minister disturbs them...

  • They neglect the true peace being extended.

The farmer and the dog (Spurgeon, 7, 183). God warns you. Your faithful conscience is doing its best to save you.

And you try to kill your only friend. It is not your conscience that is guilty of the turmoil that is in your heart.

  • It is your sin.

PEACE, PEACE, WHEN THERE IS NO PEACE. Put out the enemy of sin.

Peace Through Resolutions

I will turn to God when I retire. Apprentice...Journeyman Journeyman...Master

  • All debts are still unpaid. Hearts grow harder, Sin grows stronger.
  • No easier to surrender to God later.
  • You are fool enough to believe that you will repent by-and-by. sop’s fable of a man crossing a river (Spurgeon: 7, 185). I have probably missed some of you; I will sharpen my point.

Crying Peace, Peace, When There is no Peace

Men are taught to believe in a certain set of sentiments for salvation.

  • They are not warned that it is all in vain without a real living faith in Christ.

Believe what I tell you and you will be saved.

This lie is growing in popularity. The greatest damnation goes to the self-deluded soul who believes he is a child of God, but does not escape from his life of sin. They speak of sovereign grace while they live in sovereign lust.

If you do not hate sin, it makes no difference what doctrine you claim to believe.

Men Whom God Has Given Up

Hosea 4:17

I do not say there is one like that here today. But there are those who have been given over to the damnation of the lie because they would not receive the gospel of Christ.

  • He hears a sermon which he does not heed.
  • He is never troubled, never pricked. PEACE, PEACE, WHEN THERE IS NO PEACE. Examine yourself.
  • There is as sure a road to hell along the highway of morality as there is in the swamp of vice.

Make certain that you build on nothing but Christ. If you do, your damnation is just as sure as if you were in the lake already.
