Introduction While the word hermeneutics may seem a bit frightening when first encountered, its practice is a mainstay of Christianity. Indeed, anyone who has ever read even one verse of the bible has practiced hermeneutics. Simply put, hermeneutics is the working out of rules and methods for interpreting scriptural texts. Contrary to popular belief, the emphasis of hermeneutics is not in determining the meaning of the original speaker (writer) or hearer(s), but in determining the meaning of the text for the present age. It is exegesis which concerns itself primarily with the meaning of the speaker for the original audience. Our study of hermeneutics is divided into 6 parts. |
