Introduction

Eschatology is nothing more than the doctrine of last things. The word is derived from the Greek word, éschatos (last). Eschatology includes two very distinct yet inseparable ideas: the eternal destiny of individuals—life, death, resurrection; and the destiny of history (particularly human history)—the Day of the Lord, the end of the world, judgment, and the renewed heaven and earth. Traditionally, the primary concern of eschatology has been the destiny of the individual; but in biblical eschatology the destiny of the individual can be correctly understood only in connection with the destiny of history. Any eschatological view of the destiny of man that disregards the destiny of history, must be rejected as invalid.
