CHAPTER 13
THIRTEEN: The number of rebellion

V. 1

We first encountered this beast in Daniel.

Daniel 7:2-7 Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it. And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh. After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it. After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

SEA = People & Multitudes

V. 2

The order in which John sees these beasts is the exact reverse of Daniel's vision.

The reason for this is simple: Daniel was looking ahead to the future; John was looking backward.

The first beast is the king of the one-world empire, the king of Daniel chapter 11, the Antichrist.

WHO IS THE BEAST?

    2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

The son of perdition is a term used for the Antichrist.

The son of perdition is used only twice in Scripture: here and John 17:12

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. While I was with them in the world,I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

  • Jesus calls Judas the son of perdition
  • 2 Thessalonians 2:4-10 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

  • The language of the passage clearly identifies this person as the Antichrist.
  • 2 Thessalonians 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

In the Greek text the article to is used. This should translate as the lie to pseudei.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

In the Greek text the article to is used. This should be translated as the lie to pseudosas.

Your Father

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

His own

1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

In the Greek text the article o is used. This should be translated the liar o pseustes.

John 18:5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

Scripture never speaks favorably of Judas.

The devil has been trying to get people to believe in the doctrine of reincarnation. Even though Satan does not have the power of life, nor does he have the power of resurrection, it is possible that God will permit Satan to bring forth his (Satan's) seed in a body as a baby. Judas may be reincarnated as the Antichrist.

Revelation 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

This would be Judas' second coming.

Revelation 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

COMPARE:

Compare this verse with chapter 1 verses 4 & 8. The beast is the Antichrist.

was . . . is not . . . shall ascend

Revelation 1:4, 8

  • Him which is . . . which was . . . which is to come
  • he that liveth . . . was dead . . . I am alive for evermore

Go (from Rev. 17:8)

The Greek has apwleian 'upagein, i.e. to go your (his) way to destruction.

Acts 1:24-25 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

For those who take exception to Judas being reincarnated as the Antichrist on the grounds that Hebrews 9:27 declares it is appointed unto man once to die, but after this the judgment., I would like to point out that Revelation 13:3 says the beast will receive a head wound that does not kill him.

Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

ALIVE:

Both the beast and the false prophet are cast alive into the lake of fire. While I am not saying that Judas will be the Antichrist, I do believe that the scriptures present this as a possibility.

V. 6

Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Daniel 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvelous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

Matthew 24:15-21 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

V. 7

    Daniel 7:21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;

V. 8

John 5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

V. 10

God is going to have an account from everyone who persecutes & murders his saints.

V. 11

Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

Jesus makes a crystal clear distinction between false (anti) christ and false prophets. The second beast is referred to as the False Prophet (Revelation 16:13; 19:20; 20:10).

There are four reasons why we must interpret the second beast as being separate and distinct from the antichrist.

  1. Jesus did.
  2. The first beast has 10 horns, the second has only 2.
  3. The first beast comes out of the sea; the second out of the earth.
  4. Revelation 19:20 clearly states that both the beast (#1) and the false prophet (#2) are cast alive into the lake of fire.

Both the beast and the false prophet must be Jewish. The beast will come from a Gentile nation (. . .rise up out of the sea), and the false prophet will be directly associated with Israel.

The beast will claim that he is from the house of David. He will speak ancient Hebrew, and will have spent a portion of his childhood in Egypt.

Isaiah 9:7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

Since Egypt is a type of the world, and the Antichrist will come out of a Gentile nation, it is possible that the Antichrist will not have actually lived in Egypt. It is quite possible, and even probable, that the Antichrist will fulfill this prophecy by coming out of a worldly nation.

Concerning the false prophet, I quote from studies on the book of Revelation, Book 5, a publication of THE SOUTHWEST RADIO CHURCH, page 223:

This false religious leader has 'two horns like a lamb'. The false prophet will have the appearance of a lamb. Jesus is called the Lamb of God, and he (Jesus) is the Lamb of God in Revelation. He was pictured as having seven horns in Revelation 5:6, but the false prophet will have two horns which separates him from the Lamb in Revelation 5:6. This signifies to us that the false prophet will be the head of an apostate, one-world church, pseudo-Christian in nature, during the tribulation period. He will be garbed in the clothes of a Christian leader, but he will preach the gospel of Satan.

V. 12

The false prophet will have the same type of power as the beast.

V. 13

2 Thessalonians 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

V. 14

Demons will imitate the power of the Holy Spirit.

V. 16-18

This mark is not given until the middle of the tribulation period. It is Satan's counterfeit of 7:3.
