CHAPTER 5

V. 1-4
The book symbolizes ownership of the earth.

This book is often seen in the Old Testament.

And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: Isaiah 29:11

And when I looked, behold, an hand was sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein; 10 And he spread it before me; and it was written within and without: and there was written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe. Ezekiel 2:9-10

But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. 8 And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? 9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. Daniel 12:4, 8-9

None of the OT prophets were able to open the book, or break the seals.

V. 6
Jesus' work of Atonement had two parts.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 3:16-17

  • Verse 16 refers to the redemption of believers which is made possible through the blood of Jesus.
  • Verse 17 speaks of the redemption of the world which will be completed through the Lord's Ministry of judgment.

V. 7-10
Glory and honor are given to the Lamb.

V. 9
Only the 24 elders sing this new song. The 4 creatures were not redeemed.

V. 12-13
The Angels do not take part in the song of redemption because they were not redeemed. However, they do join in tribute to the Lamb. Angels can take part in the rejoicing over the Lord's redemption of the earth from the powers of sin, but they have no part in God's redeeming grace.

Christ died to save fallen men, not fallen angels. Also, there is nothing in scripture to indicate that the angels have sung since the morning stars sang for joy at the creation of the earth.
